My head has known that God sees everything; most of us have learned that in childhood.

"Nothing in creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account." Hebrews 4:13

However, my heart was in denial, perhaps trying to convince me that God's love would minimize my sins.

Reading that I would give an account for all my sins brought up ugly feelings from the past.

I didn't want to go back to living with sledge hammer images of God--feelings that I could "never" please Him (legalism).

What I needed to remember is that, while God doesn't overlook or ignore sins, He "does" forgive them.

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9)."
