Psalm 23:6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
Love is a profound thing. We choose it, we express it, we enjoy it, but the source and the seat of love is deep inside each person, away from the crowds, away from noise. "Love is a many splendored thing" as one song puts it, but it takes practice to keep it. You love others as you love yourself. Otherwise, you..we...all of us are simply selfish inverted beings.
I've often wondered how an atheist would sense love, since the seat of their being hates the very source of every kind of love that exists. From agape to philleo, eros to ludus, the Greeks had six different ways to describe sensations that they expressed in their culture. A parent caring for a child, a man and woman in the throes of passion. Love is not disconnected from the God who created each, but man kind has broken every one away to try to reconnect each in a human fashion. Many evil things have resulted.
But love, we know, came from and is best expressed and felt in the context of the one who created it, God. He didn't wire us to feel ascetic toward our children any more than he wanted marriage to be dry. The Bible is replete with descriptions of a couple who celebrated their love with all the passion they possessed. It came from God!
So, the goodness and love which we send between humans, which we share with pets, that which we hug our kids...that's not a desiccated touch. No, it is God who manifests in each of us to another soul. We are spiritual beings, even animals recognize love and show it. Surely His goodness and love will follow us!
Lord, help us to show the love in us for people who are broken and lonely, for our children, for our friends, for our loved ones. In Jesus name, amen!
